Strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes, where one eye turns in, out, up or down while the other looks straight ahead. It affects roughly two to four in every hundred children and can be constant or come and go. Children do not grow out of a genuine eye turn. Early assessment protects both the vision in the turning eye and the ability to see in three dimensions.
What you should know?
Types: esotropia where the eye turns inward, exotropia where it turns outward, and hypertropia or hypotropia where the misalignment is vertical
Common causes: uncorrected long sightedness driving excess focusing effort, an imbalance in the eye muscles, or the brain's control of alignment not developing normally
Why early assessment matters: the brain can begin to suppress the image from the turning eye, leading to amblyopia and reduced depth perception
What we assess: cover testing, corneal light reflex, eye movement testing, and cycloplegic refraction to measure the true focusing prescription
Management may include correcting the underlying prescription with glasses, patching to treat any associated amblyopia, and vision therapy in selected cases
Where surgical alignment is appropriate, we refer to an ophthalmologist and continue optical and amblyopia management alongside
A sudden new eye turn or new double vision at any age should be assessed promptly
